Late this afternoon Euro Disney S.C.A. surprised the markets and the company watchers by suddenly announcing that its CEO Andre Lacroix would leave his position with immediate effect. As the official press release states his responsibilities are to be assumed with immediate effect by Karl Holz for all areas of business. He was already president and chief operation officer (COO) of Euro Disney S.A.S. overseeing in this positions according to Jay Rasulo the day-to-day operations of the Resort.
The press release did not state any reason for this surprising action which had not been anticipated, even so it tries to justify the timing when Jay Rasulo is cited saying, that the financial restructuring has been completed now. On the other hand one has to wonder whether this might be a reaction to the results of the opening of Space Mountain: Mission 2 which is the corner stone of this year's drive to improve guest numbers and the hotel occupancy that had been hit by the increased capacity due to third party hotels on-site. But then as advance booking numbers are not released any statements regarding this must be clearly marked as a rumor and speculative.
Lacroix had been chosen as CEO in March 2003, steered the group through their most recent near-bankruptcy-experience and initiated "an unprecedented multi-year innovation program" as he is cited in the press release. He will now move on to "pursue other opportunities" - a term usually used if the person in question has not yet officially accepted any other job offer. The original decision for Lacroix came as an surprise, as he headed the international operations at Burger King but did not have any experience in the theme park / resort business, a precondition originally mentioned by internal sources during the search for a CEO.
Karl Holz on the other hand, who joined the group in September 2004 as president and COO of Euro Disney S.A.S. to replace Yann Caillere can look back on 9 years of experience with Disney. The native German received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the State University of New York at Fredonia. He had been promoted to the position of the president of the Disney Cruise Line in October 2003, when Matt Ouimet, the line’s prior leader had been called upon to head the Disneyland Resort in California as president. Prior to that Karl Holz was senior vice president of operations at Walt Disney World and one of the key players in developing the current “Magical Gatherings”-concept for Walt Disney World that promotes WDW as the location for extended family gatherings and reunions of groups of friends after originally holding among others the positions as vice president of Downtown Disney and vice president of Epcot. Prior to his engagement with Disney Karl Holz was the vice president of theme park operations at Knott’s Berry Farm in Anaheim, California.

Am späten Nachmittag hat Euro Disney S.C.A. die Märkte und Firmenbeobachter mit der Meldung überrascht, dass CEO Andre Lacroix mit sofortiger Wirkung seine Position aufgibt. Laut der offiziellen Pressemeldung werden seine gesamten Aufgaben ebenfalls mit sofortiger Wirkung von Karl Holz übernommen. Er war bisher als President und Chief Operation Officer (COO) der Euro Disney S.A.S. laut Jay Rasulo bereits für das Tagesgeschäft des Resorts verantwortlich.
Ein Grund für die personelle Veränderung wird nicht angegeben, allerdings bemüht sich die Pressemeldung den Zeitpunkt zu rechtfertigen, indem sie Jay Rasulo mit der Aussage zitiert, die finanzielle Restrukturierung sei jetzt abgeschlossen. Andererseits muss man sich wundern, ob die Entscheidung eventuell eine Reaktion auf die Eröffnung von Space Mountain: Mission 2 sein könnte, die das zentrale Element der Anstrengungen zur Steigerung der Besucherzahlen und der Hotelauslastung in diesem Jahr darstellt, nachdem vor allem die Hotelauslastung durch die zusätzlichen Kapazitäten der neuen Hotels Dritter im Resort belastet worden war. Da die Buchungszahlen jedoch nicht vorab veröffentlicht werden, müssen alle derartigen Aussagen ganz klar als reine Gerüchte und Spekulation gekennzeichnet werden.
Lacroix war im September 2003 zum CEO ernannt worden, führte die Gruppe durch ihre bisher letzte Beinahe-Insolvenz und initiierte "ein beispielloses mehrjähriges Innovationsprogramm", so jedenfalls seine Formulierung, die in der Pressemeldung zitiert wird. Er wird sich nun "neuen Herausforderungen zuwenden" - ein Ausdruck der üblicherweise verwendet wird, wenn die Person noch keinen neue Anstellung angenommen hat. Die ursprüngliche Entscheidung für Andre Lacroix kam ebenfalls überraschend, war er doch Head der internationalen Operationen von Burger King, verfügte aber über keine Erfahrungen im Bereich Themenparks / Resort. Genau diese war aber von internen Quellen während der Suche nach einem neuen CEO als ein Kriterium benannt worden.
Karl Holz andererseits, der im September 2004 als President und COO von Euro Disney S.A.S. Yann Caillere ersetzte, kann auf 9 Jahre Disney-Erfahrung zurückblicken. Der gebürtige Deutschemachte seinen Abschluss als Bachelor of Business Administration an der State University of New York in Fredonia. Er war erst im Oktober 2003 zum Präsidenten der Disney Cruise Line ernannt worden, nachdem sein Vorgänger dort, Matt Ouimet, als Präsident zum Disneyland Resort nach Kalifornien wechselte. Zuvor war Holz Vice President of Operations in Walt Disney World und intensiv and der Entwicklung des aktuellen „Magical Gatherings“-Konzeptes für WDW beteiligt, das Walt Disney World als Ort für Familien- und Freundestreffen bewirbt. In den vorangegangenen Jahren hatte er diverse andere Funktionen in WDW inne, so als Vice President Downtown Disney oder Vice President Epcot. Erfahrungen im Bereich von Themenparks hatte er ursprünglich als Vice President Theme Park Operations bei Knott’s Berry Farm in Anaheim, Kalifornien, gewonnen.
